Updating Your Theme
When you initially buy the theme, you will already have the very latest version to install on your Shopify site, so feel free to skip this chapter for now. But if you’re updating from an earlier version, then continue reading for information on what to do next. Sadly, Shopify does not provide an easy way to update existing themes, but we’ll make the process as simple and quick as possible.
Download the Latest Version
First and foremost, you need to get the latest download package. Whenever a new version becomes available, you will automatically be sent an email with a fresh download link. Click on the link to begin downloading the .zip file. Once the file has been downloaded, extract the contents just like you did when you first purchased the theme.
Uploading Your New Theme
You can access your new theme .zip file via your personal account in our private theme store, or via the email link that was provided.
Login to your dashboard, navigate to Online Store > Themes > Upload Theme. Select your unzipped theme file from your computer and click > Upload File.
Before you go any further, it is also highly recommended that you create 2 fresh copies of your new theme, 1 for keeps and 1 for testing as well as the 1 you will start to customize. You can do this simply by making a duplicate. Click Online Store > Themes > Actions > Duplicate.
We also recommend that you read the full documentation before your start to customize your theme. Familiarise yourself with the themes Section & Settings to get the most out of this theme.
Wait, Where's All My Customizations Gone?
You’ll notice that when you upload the theme, all of your previous changes from an earlier version will not be carried over automatically. This is because you are essentially uploading a new theme. There’s a few extra steps you’ll need to take before the theme update is fully complete.
On your live theme, which will be the previous version of the theme, click on the Edit Code under the Actions tab:
This will take you to the theme code editor page, where you can access all of your theme template files. Don’t worry, we won’t be doing a lot here, just copying and pasting a bit of code. Under the Config folder, there’s a file name settings_data.json. Click on that to view it’s contents. Now right click over the code and click on Select All.
This will highlight all the text. Right click again and then click on Copy. This will copy all the contents to your clipboard.
Now go back to your Themes page and click on the Actions tab of the new version you just uploaded. Then click on Edit Code.
This will take you back to the code editor screen, but for the new version of the theme. Locate the same settings_data.json file and then right click on the code area, then click Select All, then Paste to replace all the content with the one you copied onto your clipboard earlier. Click on Save in the top right corner to update the file.
All of your settings should carry across to your new version now, with the exception of any new settings that were added in the new version of course. You’re ready to carry on making edits and checking over your store before publishing it to go live.
